Steps to help protect our planet

Here at Jitterbug Jewellery I'm all about creating beautiful pieces that will last and to help protect our planet in the process. So I wanted to share with you my sustainability promise and the steps I'm taking to make the jewellery industry more respectful to people and the planet.

Recycled silver and gold

Making my pieces using recycled sterling silver and gold as much as possible instead of newly-mined means less impact on the planet, far less wastage and jewellery that’s just as beautiful.  I've still got work to do on using gold-filled as for now, the gold used is not always recycled and its also about finding an alternative to gold-filled that is still affordable without compromising on quality and finish. Gold-filled rather than gold plated is a highly effective process to make sure every piece is made to last. With gold-filled, a thick coat of 14ct gold is bonded to each piece. This application is a permanent bond so the gold won’t flake, peel or tarnish which is often found with gold plating.

And the recycling doesn't just stop in the making process.. Throughout the year, all the leftover metals from my workshop like bits of chain, sprues from casting and dust created from sawing, filing and polishing are all recycled as scrap metal. I send these to a specialist precious metal recycling company where it will eventually re-circulate into the industry as hallmarked metal.

No more throwaway culture

I make all my pieces to order which means I'm keeping wastage to a minimum as well as only creating small batch collections rather than mass production. Making jewellery consciously on my part and using processes designed to make my pieces last, means you can be a conscious consumer every time.

Responsible sourcing

As gemstones can’t be recycled in the same way as metals, I source gemstones from around the world using UK family suppliers who are aligned with the World Jewellery Confederation’s Responsible Sourcing Policy. This means I can be confident that the people employed in workshops who process these natural wonders are treated well and fairly.

Recycled packaging

As well as looking super beautiful and luxurious, much of my packaging is recyclable but I still have work to do on making it all recyclable or made from recycled materials.

By taking some small simple steps to make jewellery and shop jewellery more consciously and sustainably, we can all do our bit towards making a difference to our beautiful planet.
